A scientist is using a colony of E. coli to synthesize a protein she wishes to study. She adds a sample of one thousand bacteria to a growth medium, and they begin reproducing quickly. The number of bacteria in the sample increases five-fold every day. Some time later, the scientist breaks the cells open so she can harvest the synthesized protein. At this point, the colony has reached a size of approximately three million, one hundred twenty five thousand bacteria.
