1. Jumbo Bungee
Scenario
An eccentiric thrill-seeking friend, wants to promote his circus act. As part of the promotion he has decided to bungee jump with his performing Indian elephant. As his friend and an upcomming engineer you offer to design the platform, from which the elephant will bungee jump, over a deep gorge. There is a river flowing at the bottom of the gorge. Across the gorge is a foot bridge, 90 m above the river. You are to build a cantilevered platform of suitable size and safety that will bolt onto the bridge. There is speculation that sometime in the future, knowing that elephants are natural thrill-seekers, that there will be other instances of jumping elephants. The bridge is over a 90m deep gorge and the bungee should stop 10 m before hitting the ground.
Instructions:
1. Draw a free body diagram of the setup focusing on the beam portion
2. Calculate the maximum bending stresses using beam formula
3. Complete the finite element analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks/Ansysis
4. Compare the results (Max bending stress (calculated) with simulated results)
