Succession is a series of changes that occur in an ecological community over time. Ecological succession is the steady and gradual change in the species within a given area in response to the changing environment. Succession is predictable and inevitable process with the ultimate aim of reaching or regaining equilibrium in the ecosystem. Succession can happen in a large community following a forest fire or hurricane or in a smaller community such as a garden or farm. When a farm or garden is left unplanted, secondary succession occurs, returning the land to a mature, climax community. Consider the list of plants above.
