Question 16 (2 points)
A large wheel is turning in a factory. The wheel is
3m in diameter, is oriented vertically like a car
tire, moves counter-clockwise, and you observe
that the axle (centre) of the wheel is 5m above
the ground. There are two points marked (with
chalk) on the edge of the wheel that are used to
align the wheel for maintenance. Point One is
called the "maintenance position" and is initially
marked directly to the right of the axle and at the
same level. Point Two is directly below the axle
when it is in the maintenance position.
a. Create an equation that can be used to
model the height of each of the points.
b. A worker is working below the same wheel
in a maintenance tunnel (lucky him). He
notes that when the wheel has rotated
120° counter-clockwise from the
maintenance position, Point Two is 2.25m
above his position. How far below the axle
of the wheel is the worker?
