A voter registration drive called Freedom Summer, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project, took place in 1964 with the goal of increasing the number of Black voters in Mississippi.
In addition to running freedom schools to instruct both adults and children in literacy and civics, Freedom Summer aimed to combine voter education, registration, and political activism.
The Mississippi River was overrun with college students in the summer of 1964. Students from various colleges, backgrounds, and Civil Rights organizations made up the group. They shared a common objective, which was to increase the number of African Americans registered to vote in Mississippi, despite their differences.
