The first battle at the Alamo took place on February 23, 1836. This battle was an initial attack by the Mexican army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

Following a thirteen-day siege, the defenders of the Alamo, which included the Texan volunteers led by Colonel William B. Travis and James Bowie, were all killed in a final assault. The Mexican army suffered heavy casualties with over 600 dead in the attack. The second battle at the Alamo took place on March 6, 1836. This battle was much larger in scale, with an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 Texan militia under the command of General Sam Houston fighting against an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 Mexican troops. After a two-week siege, the Texan forces were eventually overwhelmed and forced to retreat. The Mexican army also suffered heavy casualties, with estimates placing their losses at around 1,500 to 2,000.
