I need help with an essay for my African American Experience class and going over my essay. It has to be at least 5 pages. I would also like Feedback on the essay.
My name is Lennox Lee and I am a freshman at Morehouse College. My major is in Education Studies and I took a course called African American Experience. I chose to take the course African American Experience because I wanted to take a history class for the semester. However, I also wanted to learn more about my culture, which is black culture. I have also had a passion to know where me and the rest of my ancestors came from. I also had the desire to know why black people were brought to America. I learned about my culture and what it means to be a black person because I learned that Africa has great historical importance for understanding the importance of the first animals and their evolution. Africa was also acknowledged as the early small age of humanity, for having historically allowed the development and expansion of the human race to go through agriculture and water resources. Some examples of agriculture that helped this human race were black eyed peas, watermelon, tamarind, the kola nut, and oil palm. The water resources of Africa was that the Niger Basin had to move around a lot in the colonial times because of the French and British empires sharing the same water resources with their rivers. (Protecting Water Resources in the Niger River Basin) This information was very interesting to me.
I chose this major of education because I want to help future generations of students do well. I also want to make good relationships with students, just like I did when I was going to middle school and high school. I also chose Education as my major because not only do I want to help students do well academically and make relationships, I also want to make good relationships with my colleagues who will also be teachers at the school I choose to work at. I want to be a little like how I was in the past with me going to school except me being in a different setting with helping students and learning from them. The age range I would like to work with is either 5th Grade in Elementary School or 8th Grade subjects Math and Science or even High School Juniors and Seniors.
After taking the African American Experience class, I felt honored and privileged about learning about the black history of people. I would define race as a way to define someone's skin color and the way people see others either as a good person or a person who wants to cause trouble. An example of Race would be that African Americans were the people who were transported from Africa to America to work there. They had to be working every day and they were kidnapped. African Americans' rights were long denied in the social and political part of America. (Lynch, Hollis) I would define resistance as black people were getting rejected from doing certain activities even though they had gained freedom in 1863. An example of resistance is that back in the late 1700s, the American Colonists weren’t pleased with the British asking them for taxes even after the Americans told the British no in the government which then resulted in them going to war. I would define racism as a way by which systems and policies, actions and attitudes create inequitable opportunities and outcomes for people based on race.
