A compromise here between Missouri and US constitutions was hammered up by Henry Clay's envoy.
The Missouri Compromise, a two-part compromise, was negotiated by prominent politician Henry Clay, who was instrumental in its success. In the beginning, a slave state called Missouri would've been admitted to the union; however, Maine, a free state that had long desired separation from Massachusetts, would be brought to the union as a counterbalance.
Until the Kansas-Nebraska Treaty of 1854, this clause was in effect for 34 years. Dred Scott v. Sandford, a case decided by the Supreme Court in 1857, declared the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional.
