Liaqat's answer caused the translator to raise his voice slightly at him. Iqbal's mother broke in briefly, and she, too, raised her voice at Liaqat. It was as if he had not given the answer they wanted to hear.
"He was crying and he was confused," said the translator.
I knew it could not have been all that Liaqat had said, but we had no way of probing further.
