Bill throws a 10.0-g ball straight down from a height of 2.0m. The ball strikes the floor at a
speed of 7.5 m/s. What was the initial speed of the ball?

Answer :

The initial speed of the ball is 4.12 m/s.

What is speed?

Speed is distance travelled by the object per unit time. Due to having no direction and only having magnitude, speed is a scalar quantity With SI unit meter/second.

Given parameters:

Mass of the ball; M = 10.0 g.

Height from where ball straight down from : h = 2.0 m.

Final speed of ball; v = 7.5 m/s.

And we known that, acceleration due to gravity; g = 9.8 m/s²

We have to find:  the initial speed of the ball: u = ?

We know that, v² = u² + 2gh

⇒ u² = v² - 2gh

⇒ u² =( 7.5)²  - 2×9.8 ×2

⇒ u² = 17.05

⇒ u = 4.12 m/s.

Hence,  the initial speed of the ball is 4.12 m/s.
