nstructions: For this assignment, you will visit a significant historic site or museum or take a historical tour related to
African American History in the greater Jacksonville area. In a two-page essay, you should evaluate the extent to which
African American History is present at your chosen historic site, museum, or tour. For a museum, you may choose to focus
on a specific exhibit. Because this is an assignment that should be conducted outside of normal class hours, I urge you to
plan ahead.
Your two-page essay should address the following:
• A description of the historic site, museum, museum exhibit, or historical tour. What is the purpose of the place
you visited or the tour you took? Who is the intended audience?
• Why is the site, museum, exhibit, or tour historically significant? What does it reflect about African Americans’
experiences in the region?
• Is there any indication about how interpretations of the subject(s) of the site, museum, exhibit, or tour may have
evolved over time?
• Who is in charge of the historic site, museum, museum exhibit, or historical tour? In other words, who is
responsible for the funding or leadership of the venue? How might this affect the historical interpretations
presented?
• To your knowledge (especially in relation to what you have learned in this course through lecture, readings,
discussion, and documentary films), does the venue present an accurate history related to the topic at hand?
Alternatively, does the venue omit anything that might be important for the public’s knowledge of the subject?
• To what extent does the venue’s presentation engage the public and foster dialogue?
• Does the historic site, museum, museum exhibit, or historical tour evoke an emotional response, from you or from
others? In what ways and why?
• If you were in charge of the historic site, museum, museum exhibit, or historical tour, what would you do
differently?
