Have you noticed recently when grocery shopping that some products have the same shape packaging and the same price BUT the quantity in the package has been reduced? You know this by studying the information on the package.

There are also times when stores offer successive percent discounts on a product that can mislead the less than careful shopper about how much is actually being saved.

Let’s do some math to analyze these practices and their effect on our budgets.

Be sure to show all the steps you took to reach your answer for each question.

For Question 1, use the data in columns B, C, D in the chart below for the row that corresponds with your assigned number.

For Question 2, use the data in column E in the chart below for the row that corresponds with your assigned number.

Section 7-1 in the text will have helpful information and examples.


Question 1

You go to your favorite food market and see an item that you have regularly purchased, although the last time was 3 months ago.

a. The package looks the same BUT looking at the label you see that the quantity of units in the package has decreased. What was the percentage of decrease in the quantity? Show all your steps to reach your answer.

b. You see that the price is the same for both packages as before, BUT with the quantity decrease in the new package you want to check the change in the unit price. By how much did the unit price in the new package increase or decrease? Round answer to nearest cents. Show all your steps to reach your answer

c. What was the percentage of increase or decrease for the unit price? Round answer to one decimal place. Show all your steps to reach your answer


Question 2

Moving on from grocery shopping, you go to a big box store to take advantage of an advertised 20% discount on a particular small appliance. As you enter the store you are handed a coupon for 5% off the discounted price on a specific brand of the appliance you want to purchase. You know that you would not be saving 25% off the original price! What percentage will you actually be saving? Show all your steps to reach your answer.
