School context
School is a unique space because it has its own culture, although norms of dominant American
culture often prevail. Understanding what is considered appropriate at school helps you navigate
it more easily. Because schools often bring together people from different cultures, it is helpful to
understand that people do things differently - but each person's communication style has value
and is a way to connect. While learning new ways to interact with new people, it's smart to follow
customs and norms that feel comfortable to you. At the same time, remember that as long as
people are respectful, no one way of interacting is better than another.
