Painfully, Jody stretched her hand to let her teammate help her off the floor. Her hip hurt; walking to the free-throw line, she hobbled.
“What was that about?” she demanded of the opposing guard, who’d aimed a broad shoulder at Jody and knocked the wind out of her.
“Stay out of my space,” the opponent grunted shortly.
“It’s not your space, it’s everyone’s court,” Jody thought, but decided not to say it. Instead, she smiled at the guard and said, “You can talk all game. I don’t care.”
She bounced the basketball hard against the floor as she stood at the line, breathing evenly and eyeing the basket. “Okay, let’s see whose space this line is,” she thought, and sank both shots.
