In ancient times one would find empires made up of numerous civilizations often conquered or absorbed into and controlled by the empire. Can nationalism exist within an empire, or will nationalism cause an empire to fall?(ANSWER IN 3-4 sentences PLEASE)

Nationalism cannot exist within an empire. Nationalism will most likely be responsible for the collapse of the empire because  nationalism delegitimizes imperial rule.

Nationalism refers to the absolute trust and support for a persons own Nation. Nationalism tends to show that a person places the interest of his own nation far above his personal interest and above the interest of other nations.

Nationalism emphasizes breeds patriotism, loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation or nation-state and upholds the ideology that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests.

An empire comprises of several nation-states which are under a sovereign rule. Nationalism cannot exist under an empire because the individual nations that make up the empire will always place the interest of their nations far above the interest of the empire. This is the reason why so many empires collapsed.
