Alex Haley made history when he wrote Roots. He published Roots in 1976. Roots told
the story of Haley's African ancestors who were forced into slavery in the United States.
The book won a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize. It was turned into a television
miniseries in 1977. The miniseries was hugely popular; 130 to 140 million Americans
watched at least some of the episodes. The series was nominated for thirty-seven Emmy
awards and won nine of them.
