It is difficult to determine the identity of the first male doctor in the United States. Not so for the first female physician. Her name was Elizabeth Blackwell, and in 1849 she graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York. After graduating, she practiced medicine internationally, working with patients in both the United States and Europe. She also founded several medical schools for women. Dr. Blackwell was truly a pioneer and visionary for female physicians.
