CASE STUDY: Christian, Professional Sprinter
Christian is a professional sprinter who specialized in the 100m and 200m sprints. He won several meets, including the United States Track & Field Championships. His win qualified him for the USATF World Championships which were to be held in London two weeks later. Upon his win, the media started to dig into his personal life. He had recently been warned by the US Anti-Doping Agency, the agency that tests professional athletes to ensure fairness in sport, that if he were to miss one more blood test within the calendar year, he would be banned from the sports for 4 years. USADA only allows athletes to miss 3 blood tests within a calendar year. Christian had already missed two, which stirred up speculation that he was purposefully avoiding testing. Various social media platforms and articles created a buzz in the track and field world leading up to the USATF World Championships where Christian was coming in as the favorite. However, the stress of a doping speculation started to cause Christian more nerves than excitement. On the day of the 100m final, Christian false started out of the blocks which resulted in a disqualification. Use the questions above to address any physical, emotional, and social factors that may have impacted Christian's performance.
