weird question, can yall check this for me? Its about Teddy Roosevelt. Passage below,.
Theodore Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President William McKinley in 1898, and helped plan the naval war against Spain. When he returned he was elected governor of New York in 1898. He was an American politician, and the 26th president of the United states after McKinley's assassination from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt became a leader of the Republican Party and became a huge supporter of anti-trust and Progressive policies. In New York City, there is a debate going on that the Theodore Roosevelt statue be removed. It should be removed because of racism of blacks and indigenous people. It was a symbol of racism of natives and blacks because he believed navites should be removed and that blacks wouldn’t be good soldiers.
Theodore Roosevelt spoke of Native Americans as “squalid savages” and justified taking their lands by force as a means to spread white European civilization. “The most righteous of all wars is a war with savages, though it is also the most terrible and inhuman. A sad and evil feature of such warfare is that whites, the representatives of civilization, speedily sink almost to the level of their barbarous foes.”- His words on the war with Native Americans. Theodore Roosevelt also described the evils of slavery but did not believe, half a century after it ended, black people were ready to vote. “I know what a good side there was to slavery, but I know also what a hideous side there was to it, and this was the important side.”- His words on slavery.
These beliefs and actions are important because they make Roosevelt a very bad person. Slavery was wrong in so many ways. Theodore Roosevelt may have done positive things like making national parks, but it is unfair to blacks and Natives to see a statue of someone who looked down on their race.
In conclusion, the statue should be removed. It may be good to put the statue in a museum about Theodore Roosevelte, and his accomplishments. The statue shouldn't be of someone who hurt people, or who disliked blacks or Natives.
