The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax
protest in the in 1791 during the
presidency of George Washington.
Grain farmers who were forced to pay
a new tax to pay off America's war
debts. The farmers, who resisted,
many war veterans, were fighting for
the principles of the American
Revolution, in particular.against
taxation without local representation.
Washington raised 15,000 militia and
rode at the head of an army to
suppress the insurgency. The Whiskey
Rebellion demonstrated that the new
national government had the
willingness to suppress violent
resistance to its laws and Constitution
is strong enough for enforce its laws.
