How could the reality of American slavery coexist with the ideal of American liberty?
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. It was a pronouncement of the liberation of the Thirteen Colonies from British rule. In this document, Jefferson wrote:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These famous words have inspired quests for freedom around the world. However, the ideals of the Declaration of Independence were not a reality for many people living in America during the 1700s. The institution of slavery and the subjugation of enslaved blacks continued long after Americans won the Revolutionary War.
