We learned in Chapter 6 of The American Yawp and in Lecture 7 that many U.S. Presidents and political leaders feared a “contagion” of French-style liberty in the new nation. Based on what you know about the federal government’s response to Shays’ Rebellion, the Whiskey Rebellion, and the French Revolution, would you say the United States grew to be a more conservative or a democratic nation in the 1780s and 1790s? Or a mix of both?
