Group A
81 out of 87 trials were successful (small) 234 out of 270 trials were successful (large)
81/87=93 234/270= 87 Mean 90
The percentage of successful trials for group A is at 93%
Group B
234 out of 270 were successful trials (small) 55 out of 80 trials successful (large)
234/270=87 55/80=69
87+69=156/2=78
The mean percentage of successful trials for group A is at 93% whereas the mean percentage is 78. So in mathematical terms group A has the better probability of a successful treatment compared to group B whose probability of having a successful operation is at 78.

Treatment A
Small stone treatments: 81/87 = 0.9310 = 93.10% success rate
Large stone treatments: 234/270 = 0.8667 = 86.67% success rate
Overall success rate for both small and large stone treatments: 315/357 = 0.8824 = 88.24%
Treatment B
Small stone treatments: 234/270 = 0.8667 = 86.67% success rate
Large stone treatments: 55/80 = 0.6875 = 68.75% success rate
Overall success rate for both small and large stone treatments: 289/350 = 0.8257 = 82.57%
