There were often times when fugitive slave laws required police officials to apprehend runaway slaves. However, this was problematic because without photos of the slaves, anyone matching the description could be captured and would e accepted in place of a runaway. Can you imagine having to constantly fear for the safety of yourself and your children? Do you think that officials in free states should have been forced to apprehend runaways, or do you think that is going too far? Do you think that constant fear undermines the idea of freedom? How free can you be if at any moment, your place could suddenly become that of a slave? With slave catchers in northern states, why do you think people stopped there instead of continuing on to Canada?
