Zoey is a high school junior. She is taking 3 AP classes, has a job and is on the cross country team. She is really stressed about all aspects of her life. During the week, although she is really tired she can’t fall asleep until 2 am because her mind is racing. She is chronically sleep deprived. When she does finally get good sleep she has very vivid dreams about school work, her job and cross country.
Discuss how the following concepts apply to Zoey’s situation:
Insomnia- persistent problems falling or staying asleep
REM Sleep-Rapid eye movement sleep where vivid dreams occur
REM Rebound- tendency to get more REM sleep when deprived of it for several nights
Information processing theory of Dreams- Theory that says dreams are a way of processing the stresses and information we encounter during the day.
