A lever is a type of tool. In its simplest form, a lever is a bar that moves around a fixed point, or fulcrum. Levers make it easier to move, lift, flip, or crack things. What you're trying to move is the load, and the force you use to move it is the effort.
Levers are classified based on where the fulcrum is compared to the load and where you apply the effort: in a class one lever, the fulcrum is between the load and the effort; in a class two lever, the load is between the fulcrum and the effort; finally, in a class three lever, the effort is applied in the center between the fulcrum and the load. Many everyday tools are levers. A pair of scissors, for example, combines two class one levers. You squeeze the handles (the effort), each scissor rotates around the pin (the fulcrum), and the blades cut the object between them (the load).
