Wild Feline Neighbors
Why It Might Not Be Such a Good Idea to Invite Them in for Coffee
Wild felines such as panthers, pumas, or cougars didn't expect to have to make way for humans when they set up camp in North America's forests. The ever-growing human population is increasingly encroaching on the cats' habitats, and laws protecting the wild cats are increasing the feline population, as well. This leads to the dangerous possibility of cat-and-human encounters. Though the attacks are rare—there have only been 50 attacks in the last 100 years—most attacks have occurred within the past 20 years.
Take precaution and remember that an encounter is very unpredictable and each instance may be different. The cat may intimidate, run, or attack, but no particular action should be assumed.
Here are some tips to follow should you encounter a wild cat:
Reach to the Sky: Appear as large as possible by standing in the upright position and spreading out your arms or coat. The cats assume that anything on four legs might be prey, and standing straight up will confuse the animal.
Don't Use Your Inside Voice: Using a calm soothing voice, like you would use for a regular house cat, may cause more confusion or fear in the animal.
Use a Weapon: Weapons such as large sticks or rocks may add a measure of protection. But remember not to bend over when picking them up off the ground. Retrieve them as quickly as possible.
Do Your Best Human Impression: If conflict is unavoidable, it is recommended to fight back and never run away from the cat. Running may trigger an instinct in the cat to pursue you and hunt you down as prey.
Again, encounters with cats in the wild aren't a daily occurrence. But with humans and mountain lions living in such close proximity, there might come a day when you'll have to be prepared.
