A U-shaped tube has equal amounts of two solutions in it, separated by a membrane
that is permeable to water and glucose, but not sucrose. Side A, on the left,
has a solution of 10% sucrose and 20% glucose. Side B, on the right, has a
solution of 20% sucrose and 10% glucose.
Will there be a net movement of
any substances across the membrane? If so, which?
Will one side end up with
more solution than the other? If so, which side?
