Fourth Quarter
As Jason lined up his shot from the free-throw line he thought, "The entire season has been leading up to this game. I have to make this basket to prove that we deserve to go to the state tournament.”

The entire town was gathered in the gymnasium to watch the Lawton High School basketball team take on their rivals. The Lawton Eagles had looked great all season and had an undefeated record going into the game. They had worked relentlessly during practice all week, preparing for tonight’s game.

However, so far, the game had been an emotional rollercoaster for both the players and the fans. The opposing team had been leading the entire game and the Lawton Eagles were scrambling to stay within a few points. With only three seconds left, and the Eagles down by two points, Jason was at the free throw line.

A hush came over the crowd as Jason tossed his first free throw towards the basket. The crowd cheered as the ball swooshed easily through the net. Preparing for his second shot, Jason dribbled twice and squared up to the basket. He took a deep breath and released the ball. It bounced off the rim and rolled just outside of the basket. There was a disappointed sigh from the bleachers.

Jason, however, did not hesitate and sprinted for the ball the moment he realized he had missed. He snatched the rebound and dribbled to the outside, outmaneuvering the defensive players. Lining up at the three-point line, he faked once, and then released the ball towards the basket.

The ball seemed to rotate in slow motion as all eyes followed its path in silence. The buzzer sounded and just a second later the familiar swoosh of the basket was heard in the quiet gym. The entire audience was on their feet in celebration. Jason had made the winning shot and the Eagles were going to the state tournament.
