Read this excerpt from “Moonless Meeting” and select one sentence from the first paragraph that indicates the beginning of the climax of the story and one sentence from the second paragraph that indicates the end of the climax.
The men suddenly paused as another figure stepped out of the shadows. Samuel recognized the short, stocky frame of his father. Dr. Woodhouse hardly had the commanding disposition necessary for confronting a trio of Indian thieves. Samuel swallowed heavily, feeling his dinner of beans and salt pork churning in his stomach.
Low murmurs rose from the small gathering as Dr. Woodhouse quietly conversed with one of the Indians. He held out his right hand, the Indian pausing only briefly before awkwardly accepting his grip. Then the three men guided the horses back to the center of the circle, removed the leads, and disappeared into the night.
