Learning Target: I can write a paragraph to demonstrate my understanding of
characters in the story, "Thank You, Ma'am."
Pretend you are Roger from the story "Thank You Ma'am" and write a detailed letter to Mrs.
Jones.
Ten years have passed since you tried to take Mrs. Jones's pocketbook. You are now 24 years
old and have decided to write Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones a letter. What would you
say to her? At a minimum, your letter must include the SIX items below. These items
serve as your framework. If you just list these items, without giving any detail, you will
not receive credit. You are not limited to these SIX items and may add items of your own.
It's been 10 years, since you tried to steal Mrs. Jones' pocketbook, so refresh her
memory about the incident
Apologize for what you did
Explain how much meeting her changed your life
Since she fed you that day, extend an invitation to your house for dinner or offer to take
her out to a nice restaurant
Offer to pay her back the ten dollars that she gave you for those blue suede shoes
Tell her what your life is like now, as a young adult. For example, tell her about your
family (wife, kids), school, career, or volunteer work you do in the community.
Your letter must be at least 8-10 sentences and should be double spaced. Please start
with, "Dear Mrs. Jones," and end your letter with, "Sincerely, Roger." Additionally, you
should demonstrate your understanding of complete sentences. Remember to proofread
