He swam across the river, scrambled to the top of a small hill, and looked out over the countryside. He was looking for his family. They had not been by the lily pond this morning as they should have been. His antlers pointed proudly up to the sky as he moved his eyes slowly over the land below. The land around him was very flat. The river curved back and forth. Most of the land was covered with tall, dry grass. The small groves of oak trees were far apart, and they looked very dusty. Finally, he spotted his family. They were just getting to the lily pond. He ran down the hill and swam back across the river to meet them.
How many times did he swim across the river?
