Background: When taking a college level history course, you will often be asked to write terms. Essentially, what is being asked of you is to provide the most important information about a term (this could be a person, place, event, year, court case etc…) and explain the significance of that term. It is important to note that explaining the significance is the most important part of the answer you give and should be both specific and highly detailed for full credit.

Directions: Explain the chosen terms in at least one paragraph. Remember to focus on the following things:

Who played an important role in the development of this term/idea and why their connection is important – this might be one specific person, or a group of people. (10%)
When the term developed and why that is an important date for the term – this might be a specific year, or a time period. (10%)
What is the term – how do you define or describe it? Provide a detailed explanation/definition. Details, details, details!!! (30%)
Where did the idea develop and why that is an important location for the term – this might be one country or a relationship between more than one country. (10%)
Why does it matter – what is the historical significance, or what were the short and long term impacts? (DO NOT just write, “It led to *fill in huge major concept/event here* ”!!!). (40%)
Important things to note: Your final answer should be a complete paragraph, not bullet points!

-You can look up additional information as needed to complete your terms but do not copy and paste, this needs to be in your own words!

-If you are writing fewer than 4 complete, detailed sentences, it’s too short!

-Focus on the most important information, why are they important, why do we remember them now, why should we care?

Using the information above, write your answers to the following terms listed below. Note, for full credit, ALL terms need to be addressed in separate paragraphs!

Enlightenment
Declaration of Independence
English Bill of Rights
