During the Civil War, he organized two black regiments and participated in the Mississippi Battle of Vicksburg. He was appointed by the Mississippi state legislature to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate during the period of Reconstruction, and he soon rose to prominence as a vocal opponent of racial segregation. Even though Revels's year-long tenure in the Senate was brief, he made history for African Americans in Congress.
