During the 1500s both Portugal and Spain traded with many countries around the world. Both nations engaged in the very profitable spice trade. However, they were enemies and did not share trading routes. Spain wanted to get spices from the Moluccas, islands near Indonesia. However, the only route to these precious "Spice Islands" was through Portuguese territory. The explorer Ferdinand Magellan approached the King of Spain. Magellan offered to find the Moluccas by sailing west rather than east. No one had yet found a passage through South America. The Spanish king gave Magellan five ships for the effort. Magellan found access through a long channel in South America. This channel is now called the Strait of Magellan.
