The interactive allows you to view the daily solar elevation on different days throughout the year. It also allows you to modify your
position on the Earth to see how this can affect the solar elevation. The window on top right will show you your position on the Earth
and the relative angle between you and the Sun for this part of the year.
Astronomers tend to like to build observatories where the skies are clear most of the year and the nights are very dark. As the
interactive shows, during the winter months the Sun is lower in the sky and the nights are longer. Assuming the only factor necessary to
build an observatory was the length of the night during the winter, rank the sites provided based on their suitability to build an
observatory. Longer winter nights are better in this case.
