What is conflict?

In literature, conflict is the struggle between opposing forces. Types of conflict are the following:

  • Man vs. society
  • Man vs. nature
  • Man vs. self

In the short story "The Interlopers," the initial conflict is a man vs. man one. The two characters are enemies and want to find a reason for a fight. Apparently, one of them stole some land that belonged to the other one.

However, instead of solving their issues by shooting at each other, the two men are taken by surprise. They are suddenly pinned down by a tree that falls during a storm. Now, we have a man vs. nature conflict. This is more important than the previous conflict, as a matter of fact. So much so that the two men decide to let their differences aside.

However, it is too late. A pack of wolves appears and, although the narrator does not say it clearly, we can assume the wolves kill the two characters.
