A "American Indians" perspective on American Indians. I'm not criticizing, but that's exactly how it was. I studied about Columbus discovering America and encountering Indians, the Pilgrims setting foot on Plymouth Rock and encountering more Indians, and the first Thanksgiving spent with Indians.

Hollywood's portrayal of American Indians has also contributed to our understanding of their past.

The same historical lessons concerning American Indians in America are ones that many of us carry with us throughout our lives. Additionally, because Europeans value "cowboys and Indians" historically, these teachings have become widely accepted around the world. These are the assumptions that have become ingrained in our brains regarding the development of American Indian history.

As related to me by various tribe leaders and elders, I would want to give an alternative viewpoint on American Indian history.

An American Indian's memory today may be marred by broken treaties, killings of American Indian women and children, the appropriation of traditional lands for non-Indian settlement, the removal of tribes thousands of miles from their ancestral lands, the placement on inhumane reservations, dietary changes that led to long-term health problems, the ceding of rights and freedoms, and so much more.
