1. Select one of the following prompts, which you will use to write an analytical essay of at least 750 words.
a. Examine the world of possibility alive in the minds of the young protagonists and the images of paralysis and
sterility that surround them. How does this contrast help to expand Joyce's overall message?
b. Analyze the conflict between illusion and reality in "Araby" and "Eveline". What happens to this conflict as the
stories progress? Do the protagonists mature? How does this conflict tie Into Joyce's theme, or central idea?
2. Create a clear thesis statement at the end of your introductory paragraph which responds to one of the prompts.
3. Use the original text of each story, your annotations, and your summary notes to develop your essay..
4. You should have at least three main points which are supported with specific examples and quotes from both "Araby"

5. Write a concluding paragraph which restates your original thesis, summarizes your key points, and articulates the
significance of the information presented on Joyce's central theme.
6. Edit your essay, paying paticular attention to the syntax of your writing and the use of transitions between ideas.
