My Daughter, the Future Park Ranger When my
daughter was five and we were visiting Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. She decided that
she wanted to earn as many Jr. Ranger badges as
she could before she turned thirteen. The United
States National Park Systems Junior Ranger
program is designed to enhance the experience of
children while they are visiting the nations parks.
Each time we go to a national park my daughter
immediately seeks out a Park Ranger to ask about
the activities she will need to complete in order to
earn a new badge. Once she gets the information,
she sits down with her father and me to plan out
our visit. Most badges requires participating in one
Ranger-led activity. So far, we have attended
numerous historical talks and nature hikes a
presentation by a Blackfoot Indian and a guided
walk through historical Boston. In addition to the
Ranger-led activities my daughter usually has to fill
out a workbook that is designed for her age group.
These workbooks help guide her through the park
and highlight important information like natural
wonders, historically significant buildings, and the
features of the park that are important. She has

bring her total to fifty
