Your Assignment
One section of your AP Exam consists of four short-answer questions. You are required to answer 3 short-answer questions—2 required questions covering time periods 3–8, and 1 question of your choice between a question targeting periods 1–5 and another on periods 6–9. Each question has 3 parts. Use the ACE strategy to help you remember how to respond to this type of prompt.

A—Answer the question. What is the prompt asking for? Be as direct and concise as possible. Examples and details earn no points if you don't bother to answer the question.

C—Cite facts and evidence. Use facts and details from any source provided by the prompt and/or from your text and lessons to provide evidence for your answer.

E—Explain the evidence. How do the facts and details you provided support your answer to the prompt?

Remember that you do not need a thesis for this type of prompt. You're not writing an essay, just a few well-developed and content-rich sentences that form a complete response. Don't overthink it, because on the AP Exam you'll only have 40 minutes to respond to 3 questions, each with 3 parts. This gives you about 13 minutes per question, or 4 minutes for each question part. You may want to review these examples before you start your assignment.

Steps:

Complete all parts of the short-answer question. Be sure your responses directly address the question or prompt. Be sure to clearly separate and label your each part of your response with a, b, or c.
Check your work for any spelling, grammar, or formatting issues before submitting to your instructor.
