The Shuar people live in the Amazonian jungles of Ecuador and Peru. The first recorded history of them dates back to 1549 when the Spanish were exploring the area. The Shuar were largely unknown to most of the Western world until the nineteenth century. It was then that their unusual practice of head-shrinking caught the imagination of the outside world.
Until the mid-twentieth century, war was an integral part of the Shuar culture. Both men and women were involved with warfare, which was common between neighboring tribes throughout the Amazon. After a successful battle, the Shuar would shrink the heads of their slain enemies. The shrunken heads (which are called tsantsas) were used during ceremonial victory celebrations. The tsantsas were thought to bring good fortune to the warrior.
On one level, a tsantsa was a trophy of war. It was a visible sign that the battle was a success. More importantly, however, the Shuar believed that head-shrinking had spiritual and magical significance. The tsantsa was thought to contain the soul of the slain enemy. The Shuar believed that enemies could be dangerous even in the afterlife. By containing the enemy's soul, the spirit of the deceased could not harm anyone.
The practice of head-shrinking has long been abandoned by the Shuar. These once primitive people have become more influenced by the outside world and have since adopted more modern beliefs and practices into their culture.
