The Aztecs, based in modern Mexico, demanded much from their subject peoples, including tribute, labor service, and sacrificial victims for the gods. The Aztecs gave little in return. Living in their own communities, the subject peoples had every reason to ally with any power against the Aztecs.
The Inca empire was organized differently. The Inca incorporated newly conquered peoples into their empire, sometimes even relocating them. The Inca system had a different flaw: whenever the Sapa Inca died or weakened, all potential successors fought for primacy, which destabilized the empire.
The final victor took severe measures against all his rivals, who would ally with any of the new Sapa Inca's enemies if doing so enabled them to reassert themselves.
