Literary Autobiographical Essay
For this assignment, you are to write a literary autobiography, in other words, you are going to tell the reader about
yourself through your experiences with the books you've read.
To complete this task, you should focus chronologically on three specific books that have impacted you, starting from
early childhood to your current age.
1. A book you liked as a small child - Maybe Dr. Seuss? Maybe you liked the pictures?
2. A book or series you liked in your middle grades - remember AR goals? Library trips?
3. The last good book you can remember reading- maybe this was over summer 2021, maybe it was in sixth grade.
In telling your story, include information about how you formed your opinions about reading and about books, and explain
why you have the current attitude(s) towards reading that you do. If you can remember certain vivid memories-either
positive or negative connected with these books, these are excellent details to include for the reader.
For example, you might have stopped reading or stopped liking to read because of a particular book or teacher or class.
Whatever your memories of these experiences are, try to convey them clearly and in an interesting way for your reader.
WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO IS SUMMARIZE THE PLOT OF THESE STORIES. THIS IS NOT A BOOK REPORT.
Here are some questions to get you thinking
I
"Did your attitude towards reading ever change? If so, what prompted it? Why did that change occur?
"What people were major influences on your reading development? Parents? Other family? Teachers? An influence can be
both positive and negative. How did these individuals influence your literacy?
"How did you learn to read? In class? At home? Did you teach yourself? Was reading a struggle? Was it easy?
"Why, out of all of the books you've read, do these specific texts stand out for you?
