When a child has celiac disease, his body has a major problem with gluten. Damage is done to the lining of his small intestine when any food containing gluten –are ingested.
It is a lifelong condition where there is no known medicine to cure, although a happy and normal life is said to be possible with proper management. The only treatment to follow is a gluten-free diet. Gluten includes wheat, barley, and rye which is nearly impossible to completely remove from a child’s diet. Parents need to be aware also of hygiene products especially when bathing young children.
Because the villi get damaged, they can’t absorb enough nutrients. So, children might have slow or stalled growth and development because they don’t get enough nutrients.
